Kanye West: Sway In The Morning Interview

I want to start this off by saying, no, this article is not about his freak out that went viral, or his god awful attempt at a freestyle at the end of the interview. I want to write this article about some of the points that he made throughout the interview that I thought was extremely accurate. Kanye is such a musical genius, from producing to lyrics to even music philosophy. The first point I wanted to talk about is where he compares himself to Willy Wonka. I know what you're thinking.....how in the world is he anyway like Willy Wonka??? Willy Wonka started out as just a chocolate makers, like how Kanye started out as a musician. But as time went on, Wonka went on to make more than chocolate and became very successful  much like how Kanye is trying to do more than just make music, and start designing clothes. The way he uses this comparison, he says how people are coming up to him and saying things like "Don't work on anything but the music because we love your music so much". He's looking at it like, Willy Wonka makes more than just chocolate, but that doesn't mean he stopped making chocolate, get what I'm saying? He believes that he can become successful in other lines of work besides just making music. This comparison is extremely true, if Kanye believes that he can design things or create things that would be beneficial to him or other people, why try to stop him? Let him do what he feels what he needs to do, and if it is a failure, then it's a failure. He also talks about how the fashion world is trying to control people. A representative from Puma came to him and asked Kanye how could they control him, his response was that you cant control me, which is a great answer. That is the right mindset that people need to have, if people like Leonardo da Vinci, Ralph Lauren, Martin Luther King Jr., or in a music sense Tupac were controlled by society, the government, or music labels, the world would never have such great changes or inventions. Most people don't take Kanye West seriously because of how big his ego is. He comes off as though he thinks he's some godly figure. He comes out and says later in this interview that he is "Shakespeare in the flesh, Walt Disney, Nike, Google". Instead of him coming out and saying "I am God's gift to this Earth, and I am the greatest thinker of this generation" he could come out and say how if he has the opportunity to create more, he can become one of the greatest creators of this generation, and more people would probably take him more seriously. The next big point that I liked that he said, was when Sway asked him how come Pusha T or Big Sean, being G.O.O.D. Music artists, were not apart of the Yeezus Tour? He responds to that by saying, every artist that makes "good" music is on G.O.O.D. Music, then names off people like Drake, Wayne, James Blake, and Frank Ocean. He's saying how he is not marginalizing the name and the label to just the artists that they are able to sign to that label, because realistically they cant sign every artists that makes good music. Just because that they are not signed to that label, doesn't mean that he's not going to do business with them, he wants to go beyond the label and connect and work with everyone that makes good music in his mind, that's why he goes out and gets Kendrick to come on tour with him, who I think is top 3 best artists in today's era, even though he's not signed to Kanye's label. Also, he says fuck the radio, which is personally I believe is the best part of this interview. By saying "fuck the radio" he's not saying he doesn't want his songs to be played on the radio, he's saying don't make songs for the radio, which is the best point he made all interview. A lot of artists now a days are selling out in a sense and trying to make "radio songs" to just get popular. He says don't make songs for the radio, make songs for the people, as in make songs that are good for the people, songs about ambition and struggle, or songs that will make people think. If people don't think that you are making music for the people, make music for yourself, make music that you like and that can convey the message that you want to have the people perceive. I can not stress enough for upcoming artists, is to not try to make songs that you think will make you popular, make songs that you believe has a good message or convey something that you believe, or music you like or you will enjoy yourself, that is what Kanye is saying in this interview. Personally I think this is one of the best interviews I've listened to in a while, I highly suggest everyone to check it out and really think about what he's trying to say. Like I said before....Kanye West is a musical genius......Period.....
